Green-Key was developed to address several opportunities in the keycard market. PVC plastic is an extremely damaging material that is manufactured using large amounts of chlorine. When produced or incinerated, it releases known carcinogens and toxins, such as dioxins. Existing alternatives to PVC plastic keycards, such as recycled plastic, and biodegradable and corn starch-based cards, are environmentally friendly but are much more expensive. Often times customers find themselves using Green-Key not only as an environmental improvement initiative to their hotel, but as a more economical choice as well.

 

Traditional plastic keycards are manufactured from polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Only a small percentage of PVC is recycled worldwide and is the world’s largest source of dioxin, a gas that has been linked to many health disorders. There are only a few environmentally friendly alternatives to PVC for keycards, including corn and wood keycards, which cost considerably more than the PVC cards. The paperboard construction of our card makes it an economical choice in addition to helping position hotel properties as being more environmentally friendly. The card can be re-used a number of times, and then recycled along with the normal paper recycling.
